Backstory: The Champlain Housing Trust (CHT) is the nation’s largest community land trust (CLT), with over 520 resale- restricted, owner-occupied homes in its portfolio. CHT also owns and manages 1,800 apartments, 81 co-op apartments, and 115,000 square feet of commercial space. CHT has a chartered NeighborWorks® HomeOwnership Center, is an approved HUD Counseling Agency, and is an affiliate of the Housing Partnership Network, the National Community Land Trust Network, and Cornerstone Partnership. In 2008, CHT was recognized by the United Nations with a World Habitat Award for the international importance of its replicable and sustainable model of homeownership.
Plans: In the first year of the CHIP, CHT’s work plan focused on building and supporting the network of CLTs across Vermont by conducting a survey of homes in their portfolios, providing technology and agendas for quarterly meetings, and also strengthening their organizational policies and procedures.
